The Fear of Filling out Forms

by Michael H.
(Chula Vista, CA USA)

For years now - as long as I can remember, actually - I have had an almost pathological dread of forms. Yes, filling out a "simple" form, be it employment application, doctor's office forms. I just freeze. It has gotten so bad that I have been unemployed now for over nine years because of it. Even the idea of creating a resume just makes me hyperventilate. But I can't imagine I am the only person with this "phobia".

So, for now, I will temporarily call it "Papyruphobia." Better than "Desheetaphobia," which sounds a bit offensive.

I have the same problem. I don't go to doctors, because of the paperwork, I haven't had a driver's license in over 20 years, because of paperwork, I only rent rooms instead of apartments, because of paperwork. The funny thing is I was great at test taking, 140+iq..

The fear of filling out forms is not a recognized phobia in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) or other established diagnostic frameworks. However, some individuals may experience anxiety or discomfort when filling out forms due to social anxiety, fear of making mistakes, or other underlying conditions. If the fear of filling out forms is significantly impacting your daily life, it may be helpful to consult with a mental health professional to address the underlying causes and develop coping strategies.

I'm sure you are not the only person with this type of "phobia".
