Remembering the Extraordinary

I'm conducting research for a short story for a school assignment. I wondered if there are any theories, or if anyone could make any suggestions, as to why we remember events which are extraordinary or emotional more than we remember ordinary moments.

Any opinions, however obvious or outlandish will be valued.
